چکیده

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are used in a broad spectrum of consumer products. The particle size at the nano-range gives ENMs particular physicochemical properties that may lead to exceptional performance regarding parameters such as e.g. surface reactivity, conductivity, porosity, solubility, crystallinity, optical sensitivity, bio-persistence, etc. Apart from a large range of potential benefits to the human health and the environment, the use of materials with such particular properties could also cause dangerous interactions with human and environmental systems. The research community is faced with a risky lack of adequate methodologies to investigate these potentially harmful environmental effects of materials at such a small scale. Consequently, there is a distinct knowledge gap concerning the risks caused by the environmental release of and exposure to such materials. There is no doubt that current and future ENM production quantities release them into the environment.

Modeling Flows and Concentrations of Nine Engineered Nanomaterials in the Danish Environment

Predictions of environmental concentrations of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) are needed for their environmental risk assessment. Because analytical data on ENM-concentrations in the environment are not yet available, exposure modeling represents the only source of information on ENM exposure in the environment. This work provides material flow data and environmental concentrations of nine ENM ...

Exposure assessment approaches for engineered nanomaterials.

Products based on nanotechnology are rapidly emerging in the marketplace, sometimes with little notice to consumers of their nanotechnology pedigree. This wide variety of nanotechnology products will result (in some cases) in unintentional human exposure to purposely engineered nanoscale materials via the dermal, inhalation, ingestion, and ocular pathways. Occupational, consumer, and environmen...

Potential for Occupational Exposure to Engineered Carbon-Based Nanomaterials in Environmental Laboratory Studies

BACKGROUND The potential exists for laboratory personnel to be exposed to engineered carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) in studies aimed at producing conditions similar to those found in natural surface waters [e.g., presence of natural organic matter (NOM)]. OBJECTIVE The goal of this preliminary investigation was to assess the release of CNMs into the laboratory atmosphere during handling an...
